Knowing Grants For Non Profit Organizations
There are many different jobs in non profit organizations, but anyone who has worked at any level knows how important grant applications are. Funds for non profits are notoriously unreliable. Some years, if there is a president who is friendly towards charitable work, research, and other socially beneficial programs, grants for non profit organization are plentiful.
As a matter of fact, some administrations make non profit grants so available that not all of the money is used up by the end of the term! All it takes, however, is one war hawk coming into office to ruin the entire non profit culture. Not for profit groups, ranging from researchers to charitable organizations to environmental welfare groups, go out of business left and right. In these chaotic and cataclysmic presidential terms, decades of work can be lost.
That is why securing a reliable and diverse source of grants for non profit organizations is so important. Many nonprofit organization directors put all their eggs in one basket. Sometimes they rely heavily on government grants, one of the biggest mistakes that you can make. Other times, they put their faith in one or two large private donations supported by a campaign of public fund raising.
The only problem is that if you have a leader whose focus is not inclined with these programs, then all of it could disappear. Organizations like these are well-known for going out of business easily. Because of this, decades of work and research that you’ve been doing could disappear at the blink of an eye.
Unfortunately, there is no easy solution to the problems of grants for non profit organizations. All in all, it depends on the nature of your group. For many research organizations or groups that target more worldwide issues, non profit organization grants can be a pretty reliable and long-lasting source of funding. The research being done might be seen as broadly valuable and not subject to the whims of government offices. The issues being addressed might be sweeping social ills not likely to change completely anytime soon.
For smaller groups, however, grants for non profit organizations must be supported by robust fund raising campaigns. If you want to see support, for example, an individual watershed, you need to convince the community that it is in their interest to protect their local environment.
Not only does this make more sense financially than seeking out a single grant for a non profit organization, but it also encourages community participation, something which strengthens and legitimizes any nonprofit.
Remote Working Part 3 – Basic Toolkit
Self discipline more….
Before I present to you my collection of my favourite online tools that will definitely assist you to operate remotely, I must bring to your attention one more point concerning self management and especially to do with keeping your focus and levels of concentration
I’ve observed and confirmed a common habit in people who work on the web and I’ve been in contact with for a substantial period and I call this trait the fifty min effect. I discovered these friends who focus and work for fifty minutes and then pause for a whole 10 minute rest and are considerably more efficient and produce a substantially greater quality of work than acquaintances who don’t have structured working methods.
OK as promised for your consideration is my list of choice remote working tools:
Electronic Mail
Google Mail has a price tag of zero. For my money the search and label (a bit like folders) functions have no equal. So far the only gripe I have is that it runs a bit slow on not so new PC’s
Phone calls
Skype used to drive me crazy as the call quality and reliability was unacceptable, but hats off for the geeks at Skype now as they have substantially changed the quality of the service. For few dollars a month they enable me to call and conference in any phone and Skype user on Earth. The latest version of Skype has a collection of excellent features and there are now plenty of of practical add ons.
Organising Content
Evernote has connected over a million users in no time at all – it enables you to store, organise and annotate any species of digital content in the Cloud. Just go check it out…it’s free.
Invoicing, Time and Expenses capture, Accounting and CRM
You definitely know that my desire to work remotely was originally inspired by Quickbooks Online, a small business accounting software system. But it is no match for the free edition of salesorder.com – a lead to cash system that’s as easy to use as a hairbrush I looked at NetSuite whose pricing (and people) scared me off. My choice here is salesorder.com – Go check it out.
Growing Number of Schools in Online Charity Directory Earning Money through Web Search
As educators gear up for another year of having to do more with less, some innovative fundraising programs are empowering teachers, parents, students and administrators to take matters into their own hands to help bridge the gap. Freelanthropy.com is one such company that recently introduced a free suite of online fundraising tools to educators at the 2009 National Education Association Expo in San Diego, CA.
Facing budget cuts schools are looking for ways to generate revenue to protect the quality of education that all students should receive. Freelanthropy.com is now offering an innovative way to enable parents, teachers, administrators and even students to quite literally take matters into their own hands to generate revenue for their school.
While making cash donations might not be as easy for families today, just searching the web is now a painless way to help schools in need. Just searching the web like you normally would now provides direct support for schools.
By simply adding a school to the charity directory and then using the free search and communication tools provided by Freelanthropy, the act of using Yahoo! contributes to whatever the school or teacher needs most.
“There is a huge range of charities in the U.S. and Canada using Freelanthropy, not just schools, but Freelanthropy was started to help schools, so addressing so many educators at the NEA conference was a great opportunity.”
Sheehy added, “With four daughters of my own I see first-hand how schools are struggling to fulfill their mission of providing the best education possible. And it’s tougher on families to give as much of their money or their time as they’re also working harder to make ends meet. Freelanthropy’s Yahoo!-powered web search tools offer a simple way for people to provide financial support to their local school even if they’re not able to make a direct financial contribution. If you don’t have time to ask your friends and relatives to buy magazines or cookie dough, this is a great option.”
In addition to empowering supporters to generate revenue for their school just by searching or using the Shop & Give charity shopping service, Freelanthropy also helps them to stay connected to their school through the free “Community Toolbar” that Freelanthropy provides to each of its nonprofit partners.
An entire district can sign up, individual schools, grades or just a class.
How the Internet changed my working life – Part 1
NetSuite Login costing you too much?
I am always amazed by the huge numbers of groups who are currently turning to the net to make a living. I operate a series of different e-commerce concerns which as a group give me more money than it was possible to ever realise by taking conventional employment. I am not saying that I have to work less hours but I don’t have commute any more, so I am free of what was at least a total of three hours commuting. I am now in a great position for the future and I cannot see me returning to full time employment.
Supervising a group of concerns is satisfying, but I have had to figure out methods of being more effective and refining my working practices. To keep an eye on my leads and prospects and the financial aspects of my businesses, I use a group of online services – you must have good small business management software to to save you time and let you focus acquiring and watching over customers. I purchased a Quickbooks login and a NetSuite login. I can use these web applications from from my iPhone and they enable me to see all of the companies events in real time.
Using my NetSuite login I am able to track all of the transactions on my e-stores and observe the effects of the Google Adwords campaigns that attract buyers to my checkouts. I have got rid of Microsoft Office which substituted with a Google Account that has all of the applications I need to do the job, with mail, document creation and spreadsheets. I can access these software from wherever I want to work.
I have revamped my skills, I have uncovered a huge volume of free and amazing value for money online education which I have quickly studied. One of the most valuable lessons I have got to know is how to identify and farm out boring operations, to experts who can do this efficiently and cost effectively. I can accurately identify the point at which I passed my earnings limit to my realising of the gains of contracting out some of the operations absorbing most of my time, to me increasing my income to beyond that of my income whilst in full time employment.
In Part 2, I get into detail about how I work.
Remote Working Part 2 – Fundamental behaviours – Basic discipline
The most cited reason people fail to adapt to operating remotely is they don’t realise the need for superior organisation and sustainable self management.
I have been working remotely for over seven years since I first discovered Quickbooks online an ‘on demand’ small business accounting software online system and was struck by the fact that if you can do accounting on the Internet then why shouldn’t you be able to do other important types of work at a distance?
Whilst working remotely has numerous upsides there are numerous traps that people easily fall into which evolve into problems that cause cuts in work output and reduced morale. The top reason for low productivity in remote employees is interruption and it is a confirmed and well known fact that it can take a person up to 20 mins to return to their original productivity level after experiencing a disturbance.
Deeper insights reveal that people who are consistently subjected to distractions are more likely to be susceptible to decreased memory ability and are prone to developing mental health trouble in later life. We live in an over communicated era and it is imperative that you recognise the problems this causes before you start working remotely. When working remotely you have to do everything feasible to eradicate the jeopardy of being distracted.
Here are the essentials:
1, Get a habit, make sure that everybody knows it and stick to it!
Good examples are a regular time of day when you look at or compose and reply to electronic mail and make or be available for phone calls. Before I began working remotely I used to receive as many as hundreds of electronic mails in 24 hours. Now I think I am unfortunate if I get in excess of four. To ’reset’ my electronic mail experience I changed my e-mail address and tenaciously took steps to look after the details being made known to anyone. I then ‘trained’ everyone who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it wisely and sparingly. I also configured an auto-responder that swiftly told anyone sending me mail at what time of day I would be attending to mail and if an item must have my urgent attention to mark it as ‘Urgent’.
2. Get rid of alerts.
Turn off absolutely everything that can send you a visual or audible alert. This includes portable and
conventional handsets and types of alerts from electronic mail such as display events, warning sounds, screen changes to your inbox list and of course facing a window. Get a door on your work room and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.
In ‘Remote Working Part 3 – My list of essentials’ I will reveal my favourite tools and software.
Remote Working Part 1 – DIY Guide – Overview
Obviously not all of us is able to work remotely as lots of careers require us to go to their place of work or travel to perform their tasks in person. Our Non-Profit is Trying to Do Good But Got No Response – Publicity Predicament Number 3
Pharmaceutical costs, gasoline prices, doctor’s fees, insurance company antics, and other rip-offs are deservedly under fire most of the time by an outraged public. But why are nonprofits immune to criticism?.
Nobody is screaming bloody murder over the cost of higher education even though colleges and universities are constantly growing in wealth as they charge steadily rising tuitions and at the same time lay off more and more employees.
It was announced recently that one of the nation’s most prestigious universities is letting nearly 200 staffers go because one of their endowments has been reduced to $26 billion. Neither the president, nor the department heads, nor any of the faculty will be affected, and neither will the construction of new buildings.
A challenge. Suspense or drama is the second ingredient that helps attract the media. This might take the form of a contest (who will win?), an attempt to break a record (such as the world’s biggest potluck dinner), a surprising comeback attempt (septuagenarians for Saturn High) or a fundraising wilderness trek (combating snakes, swamps and no sense of direction). And yes, publicity stunts still work.
Say “no” to nonessential tasks or activities that don’t help you raise money. Consider carefully before you take on additional work. Also be careful about agreeing to serve on committees that won’t be a good use of your time.
Delegate. Only do those things that you should be doing and delegate everything else. If you have no one to delegate to, recruit a volunteer or an intern to help you.
